Past, Present & Future

Mid last year, GCA was featured in an article in the Master Builder Victoria magazine. The article contained intriguing information about our Managing Director, Gerard Coutts and his strong family links to the Victorian building industry. Over the summer break, Gerard travelled to his hometown of Horsham to retrace his family history and in particular the role his father Perc Coutts played in the development of Horsham and the surrounding regional areas of Victoria.

Perc Coutts owned and operated P & A Coutts, a major building company in Horsham from 1951 until his retirement in 1982. His company was responsible for the construction of various major civic projects ie. hospitals, schools, housing commission homes, churches, banks and nursing/retirement homes throughout the central and western districts of Victoria. P & A Coutts employed returned soldiers from the 2nd World War and newly arrived immigrants who brought highly prized building and carpentry skills to Australia.

In 2009 and in recognition of the considerable contribution P & A Coutts played in the growth and development of the building industry in Victoria, a street within a new housing development in Horsham was named “Coutts Street”. Today, Gerard continues the family building tradition by retaining his father’s Master Builder Association Victoria membership no. 731.
